Ukraine offshore industry difficult place for trade unions

A. Gnatyuk, founder of the Ukraine union for IT staff ITT.Ua and an IT professional himself, told the Forum that there were around 50’000 IT specialists in the Ukraine mainly working for foreign customers. The offshore business was booming in the capital Kiev and a shortage of qualified staff was emerging. Thus salaries were rising and few thought about unions. Andy told the Forum that his union was created in December 2006 and was run exclusively by IT professionals. The slogan for their members said Andy was: Hear everyone – overcome everything! The new IT Union Ukraine will be inaugurated on 23 December 2006 in Kiev

Last Saturday some 15 representatives of three different IT company unions met in Kiev together with UNI representatives to fine-tune the modalities of creating a new union. The IT union will reach out to the Ukrainian IT industry and launch targeted organising initiatives early next year. The Kiev region will be the starting point and it is hoped that in the near future the union will cover the entire Ukrainian IT sector. Read more...

Labour news from UNI global union - for trade unions in a global services economy

The IT Committee was very enthusiastic about an initiative to create a new union for IT professionals in the Ukraine. The UNI Moscow office played an instrumental role and managed to get the financial support from the Finnish donor SASK and UNI affiliate TU. The IT Committee expressed its full support for the initiative and makes sure that the colleagues from the Ukrainian IT industry will be integrated into the UNI IT network. Read more...

	Solidarity Mission
A UNI mission consisting of representatives of the Solidarity Center of Finnish trade unions (SASK) and Finnish IT Workers’ Union along with the Moscow UNI office representatives visited Kiev on September 1-4, 2006. The UNI visit was aimed to provide assistance to an initiative group of Ukrainian IT workers in their efforts to set up a trade union of IT workers of Ukraine. Read more...
